Since discovering a mysterious anomaly in the Baltic Sea, UFO researchers have been convinced that it could be a sunken UFO, which probably crashed during the Ice Age. The Baltic Sea is a graveyard of hundreds of Viking ships, old trading ships, warships, etc. While hunting for shipwrecks somewhere between Sweden and Finland, the deep-sea divers of ocean exploration company Ocean X captured an interesting image into their sonar device in 2011.
Swedish Divers clicked an image of some unidentified object, 80 meters below the water surface that later became one of the most mysterious images of the decade. Peter Lindberg who led the research joked that at first, he thought that they discovered a UFO. He had never seen anything like that at the bottom of the sea or ocean in his 20-year career.
“We had been out for nine days and we were quite tired and we were on our way home, but we made a final run with a sonar fish and suddenly this thing turned up,” Lindberg explained.
A community of conspiracy theorists and UFOlogists believe that the Baltic Sea Anomaly could be a crashed alien spaceship sunken in ancient times. The image showed a 60-meter circular object that resembles the fictional spacecraft Millennium Falcon from Star Wars. It could have been lying on the bottom of the Northern Baltic Sea at the center of the Bothnian Sea for at least 140,000 years.
Due to its strange structure, the Ocean X team claimed that the Baltic Sea Anomaly had not been created naturally. An associate professor of geology at Stockholm University named Volker Bruchert put forward a hypothesis that the object was formed during the Ice Age, thousands of years ago.
“It’s good to hear critical voices about this ‘Baltic Sea mystery,’” Brüchert wrote in an email. “What has been generously ignored by the Ocean-X team is that most of the samples they have brought up from the sea bottom are granites and gneisses and sandstones.”
Divers wanted to inspect the object at a closer distance, but unfortunately, lack of funding prevented them from doing it. A year later, when their boat was in the proximity of the object, they encountered a mysterious electrical interference. Stefan Hogerborn, one of the members of the OceanX team said: “Anything electric out there, and the satellite phone as well stopped working when we were above the object. And then when we got away about 200 meters, it turned on again, and when we got back over the object it didn’t work.”
Denis Asberg, who came across this giant mysterious structure alongside Peter Lindberg, revealed in 2019 that there was a 25-meter tall mountain with a canyon in the middle and some loose rocks beneath it. Interestingly, he added that they found what appeared to be an “extensive trail – what some speculated could be evidence that a crash landing may have taken place.”
“We were really surprised and puzzled. We were thinking about what it is that we have found here. This is not a wreck. At that time we thought for sure there was a natural explanation,” Asberg said.
Another bizarre theory proposed that the Baltic Sea Anomaly could be a secret Nazi structure or anti-submarine weapon from WWII. According to Anders Autellus, a retired Swedish Naval officer and WWII expert, the sonar images appeared to be a system of underwater wire mesh nets developed by Nazis.
Stefan Hogeborn, one of the OceanX divers confirmed that the structure was molded from concrete, not even closer to an anti-submarine anchor base. He said that there was some kind of rock formation put there by someone. The mystery behind the existence of the strange Baltic Sea Anomaly remains unexplained today.
At that time, during World War II, the Baltic Sea was like a border between the Soviet Union, Scandinavia, and the Axis powers, especially Nazi Germany. Battles for control happened, and lots of mines were put in the sea. The Germans, needing iron ore from Sweden, fought hard to protect their shipping routes.
People think the Germans built underwater structures to mess with communication signals and maybe stop enemy mines. Could this be why Ocean-X’s equipment stopped working near the anomaly? Some say the Germans tried making flying saucers, and this could be a crash site of a Nazi Foo Fighter. These ideas are more down-to-earth than saying it’s a spaceship from outer space, but they’re still fascinating.
A Russian publication, PravdaReport.com, reported about UFO sightings in the Baltic, like in 2008 when people saw a silver disc near Kaliningrad, Russia. But not many reports back up this story.
Baltic Sea Anomaly Update
Lindberg and Åsberg haven’t shared any new information on the Ocean X page for a few years. However, there is a YouTube video from 2012 that seems to capture another exploration of the anomaly using a submarine rover.
